Temporary disability insurance for freelancers

Disability insurance, one of the most discussed insurances for freelancers at the moment. That’s because many freelancers don’t have one. Often, they feel that the costs don’t outweigh the benefits for them. Temporarily disability insurance makes sure freelancers are protected, without the high costs.

What.

Temporary disability insurance makes sure freelancers get a monthly payment for up to two years in case they have an accident or become too ill to work. This way, they’re not left without income. The payment stops if they’re able to go back to work within two years (which is the case, 95% of the time), or are unable to work for longer than two years.

Difference between temporary & regular disability insurance.

Is temporary disability insurance worse than its regular counterpart? Surely not. The only difference is the duration of payments – for two years or until the state pension age. Research shows that incapacity for work happens more often than people think, so it’s definitely important to be covered. But it also shows that the period someone is unable to work for, is often much shorter than people expect. 95% of people are back to work within two years.

Why.

There’s a high chance that a freelancer will at some point be incapacitated for work for a few months. And as they get older, this likelihood increases. Many say they can fall back on their savings, or a partner’s income. But savings often run out faster than expected, and a partner’s income isn’t always enough to sustain their lifestyle and also cover unexpected costs. A temporary disability insurance can often prevent more serious financial hardship.

Costs.

Disability insurance is often associated with high costs, but this doesn’t always have to be the case. One of the factors that determines the premium is for how long someone gets payments if they become disabled. Is it until the state pension age? Then there’s a chance someone might get years of payments, which means the premium increases. Temporary disability insurance makes payments for a maximum of two years, leading to a lower premium.
