Through online platforms, gig work has become increasingly easy to find. And with its sharp rise in popularity, challenges have arisen.
Gig workers are independent contractors and need to arrange traditional work benefits, like insurance, on their own. But traditional insurers struggle to serve gig workers. Preset policy durations and high premiums simply don't make sense for flexible work. As a result, many gig workers are left uninsured.
Temper – the biggest hospitality gig platform in the Netherlands – supports a large user base of 'FreeFlexers'. Companies, or clients, post gigs on the Temper platform, where FreeFlexers can apply. Most of these are young; they're millennials and Gen Z. They rarely have professional insurance; they often aren't even aware that they need insurance. And those who are aware are put off by the steep premiums, the tedious application process, and set-in-stone policy durations.
To overcome these barriers, Temper and Alicia created usage-based liability and accident insurance that fit the needs and lifestyle of Temper's FreeFlexers better. Enabled and disabled with the click of a button, with a premium per minute correlating to their worked hours.
Preset policy durations and high premiums simply don't make sense for flexible work: it had to be usage-based.
The usage-based insurance solution fit the nature of gig-work seamlessly. However, one issue remained: most FreeFlexers weren't aware they needed insurance.
Then, a global pandemic put everything to a halt. A good time to reassess the standing insurance offering.
With such uncertain times, the importance of insurance as a whole became more apparent. So, Temper and Alicia went back to the drawing board together.
Two things warranted a solution: 1) how do you get the highest insurance uptake, and 2) how do you offer a safety net for gig workers if they can't work, for example if they fall ill?
While it was in part due to insurance awareness and knowledge, some FreeFlexers didn't deem insurance 'worth it'. So, now what?
With some creative and critical thinking, another model was chosen: collective insurance. The hour-based premium was covered by the client, rather than the FreeFlexer. A compliance and safety win for all.
FreeFlexers didn't have anything to fall back on if they couldn't work for a longer period – until now.
Alicia and Temper developed sick pay, a world-first product. FreeFlexers now have somewhere to turn to if they can't work due to illness, an accident, becoming a parent or losing someone close to them.
Being one of Alicia's first partners, Alicia and Temper's collaboration has grown and changed over the years, resulting in one that keeps growing stronger.
With this first-of-its-kind collective insurance for gig workers, Temper is a great example of how a platform can lead the way in caring for its freelance users, helping the gig economy mature and solidify its place in society.
“The smooth implementation process only confirms our choice. Alicia's team delivers what it promises and more.”
